To those who knew him, there is sad news today that Callum Stanland passed away last night aged just 22, after a battle with cancer.
Callum was an excellent Unite Community activist who gave his all to building Unite Community in his home town of Grimsby.
Callum was diagnosed with cancer just under two years ago. When receiving his initial treatment at St James’ Hospital in Leeds, Callum also helped out with the then Unite Community Support Centre in Farsley.
He was also well known to some members of the Labour party in the Leeds area, frequently helping out with election campaigning.
He took on UKIP in local council elections and attended Unite education courses, including Durham political school.
He stood up for the NHS beside Ed Miliband in a Leeds rally in the run up to the general election proudly in his Unite hoody.
Callum’s speech to the rally was reproduced in April on this website and can be read here.
Andy Burnham, then Shadow Health Secretary, also presented Callum with a special award at the rally in recognition of his campaigning work.
He had an incredible enthusiasm and passion for the cause. He’ll be sorely missed in Unite Community and by all colleagues who knew him.
R.I.P Callum Stanland.
